Professor Marion Dolan will speak about the beloved Cathedral, the recent fire, and plans for restoration.
The world was shocked to see the 850-year-old cathedral in flames, but unfortunately fires were a regular part of the life of cathedrals in the Middle Ages and ever since. The use of candles, the many textiles on display, and the timbered roof called the ‘forest’, were just some of the fire hazards. The cathedral will be rebuilt, but the skill of medieval masons and craftsmen cannot be duplicated despite our modern sophisticated building techniques.
