Reading Behind the Words: Understanding the Short Story

Utilizing all new material, Winston will teach you the basic elements of the short story including setting, character, plot, and more. Through close reading and analysis of selected short stories, you will learn to recognize what these elements add to the story and will understand structure and meaning. 

About the instructor: Winston Aarons earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from Sarah Lawrence College and taught courses in English and writing at Lynn University where he served as director of the Honors Program.

This continuous 4-part series is designed to enhance our everyday emotional well-being, resiliency, reaction to aging, and our willingness to share our best assets with others as we journey through life. This event is both didactic and experiential. Dr. Bursor will present fascinating and useful information and encourage all attendees to share their rich experiences with their peers because we all have something worthwhile to contribute! 

About the instructor: Davele Bursor, Ed.D. has been in the mental health counseling field for over 40 years with experience as a counselor educator, bereavement specialist, public speaker, and life coach.

An engaging romp through the history of sacred music against the backdrop of various eras of human social and cultural development. You’ll start with early the beginnings in Jewish roots, Gregorian chant and the Medieval period; then on to the Renaissance and the Reformation; followed by the “isms” like Bach and Lutheranism, Mozart and Catholicism, and 19th century Romanticism; and end up in the 20th century with the Oxford movement, Revivals, Gospel, and commercialization. 

About the instructor: Dr. David Macfarlane currently serves as the organist and choir director at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Delray Beach. A critically acclaimed organ recitalist, he completed his doctoral degree at Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts, where he was chosen to receive the Elizabeth Durham Award for Keyboard Performance.
