Spellebration Rules

The Judges will have a list of the spelling bee words which they will read in the order given to them. The judge will read the word to be spelled.

Each group will compete in three rounds. Practice round, competition round, and definition round. Middle School will begin with their three rounds. High School will compete after the Middle School Winners are announced.

If there are no clear 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place winners, the competition will go into a sudden death round.*

The Spellers can request to hear the word up to three times. They can request the definition, how to use it in a sentence, and its part of speech. The Spellers cannot ask any more questions about the word. If they want, Spellers can pass or they can make their best spelling attempt. If they pass on the word, or it is spelled incorrectly, they must return to their group and are out of the competition.

Words must be spelled in a “state-spell/write-state” format. Spellers will state the word they’re assigned, spell it as they are writing it, then state the word when they have completed their spelling to signal the completion of their turn.

Judges will cross out the words from their word list once the word is no longer in play.

In the third round, the Judges will state the definition of a word and ask for the word’s spelling. The Speller will still be expected to “state-spell/write-state” their word.

Spellers will receive spelling bee tags to wear during the competition, representing their team and number.

The Spelling Bee will be held on July 22nd at 10am via Zoom Conference hosted by the Delray Beach Public Library

*Sudden Death round will consist of Spelling Bee words that are not included on the list.
