Lecture: Henry of Lancaster’s Book of Holy Medicines

Wednesday, July 8, 2020 2:00 pm

Lecture: Henry of Lancaster’s Book of Holy Medicines presented live on Zoom by Clarissa Chenovick, PhD, Assistant Professor of English, Florida Atlantic University.

Description: A fascinating exploration of Henry, the Duke of Lancaster’s “Book of Holy Medicines”. Written in 1354, it a medieval devotional text meant to edify the reader and contribute to their salvation. He uses medical metaphor to examine the effect of “sin” on the body and what must be done to “heal” and attain salvation.

Professor Chenovick offers a way for non-academics to learn about medieval devotional reading, medical/surgical ideas (including some delightfully gruesome surgical cures Lancaster says he needs to heal the wounds of sin in his soul), and general medieval culture (including the languages spoken in medieval England).
