Date/Time: 2 pm, Friday, October 2, 2020
Register below for Zoom meeting ID and passcode.
Synopsis: Florida is renowned for its beautiful beaches, natural springs, and subtropical wilderness, but it is widely joked that the official bird should be the construction crane. Dredgeand-fill projects, air pollution, and pesticides spread so uncontrollably during the twentieth century that they sparked an environmental movement within the state, and those who led the fight were very often women. Learn about these intrepid, passionate women who led the fight for unprecedented changes in how the Sunshine State reveres its unique natural resources. As a collective force, they forever altered how others saw women’s roles in society.
Presenter: Leslie Poole is assistant professor of environmental studies at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. A fourth-generation Floridian, Poole’s research explores the roles of women in the state’s modern conservation and environmental movements. She is the author of Saving Florida: Women’s Fight for the Environment in the Twentieth Century. Currently she has two book projects in process with the University Press of Florida, including a collection of essays by writers entitled “The Wilder Heart of Florida.”
