Join us for a screening of The First Grader, the story of Maruge, an 84-year-old Kenyan villager and ex-Mau Mau veteran who fights for his right to go to school for the first time to get the education he could never afford. Moved by his passionate plea, head teacher Jane Obinchu supports his struggle to gain admission, and together they face fierce opposition from parents and officials who don’t want to waste a precious school place on such an old man. A discussion with librarian Isabella Rowan will follow. Isabella recently returned from Kenya where she delivered libraries to remote village schools along the shores of Lake Victoria.
The First Grader, 2010; PG-13; 110 minutes.
