We are all products of the spirit of our times, and nowhere is that spirit — zeitgeist — more in evidence than in the sensational trials that shaped those eras. In this course, we will look at three trials that gripped our nation after the Civil War and World War Two, respectively: The Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy Trial, the Alger Hiss Russian Spy Trials, and the Rosenberg Atomic Bomb Conspiracy Trial. We will see how each of these trials impacted the American Reconstruction and McCarthy Eras, and we will learn lessons for our own time.
