“Sharpening the Saw” is a phrase most famously coined by the late Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. What Covey had in mind was that all of us, in our quest to live the most effective lives possible, had a personal obligation/opportunity to hone and sharpen ourselves in four distinct areas. These four categories will represent our focus for each of the four evenings of study.

Oct. 23 – Physical – Participants will identify unique individual roles in their lives and understand how “sharpening the saw” informs those roles. They will learn strategies and options for daily exercise, rest and diet awareness and control. They will set SMART goals for regularly attaining optimal physical conditioning.

Oct. 30 – Intellectual– Participants will identify opportunities for sharpening their perceptions and increasing their thinking capacity through regular exposure to a variety of information formats including books, news and social media. They will set SMART goals for regularly achieving optimal intellectual functioning through a regular habit of “intellectual consumption”.

Nov. 6 – Social/Emotional – Participants will develop strategies for evaluating their current state of social and emotional health, including recognition of the basic elements of emotional growth and the important components of sustaining a supportive and engaged social life. They will set SMART goals for regularly attaining their most satisfying Social/Emotional lifestyle.

Nov. 13 – Spiritual – Participants will each define for themselves a personal concept of spirituality and will have options to share these understandings with the group. They will set SMART goals toward establishing regular personal practices of spirituality.
