Pinnacle Ecological: Ocean Science Lecture Series 

An interactive lecture series exploring Florida’s ocean, coastal and estuarine ecosystems.  During each presentation, attendees will engage with local scientists who are actively studying Florida’s coral reefs, seagrass beds, oyster reefs, sharks and rays, marine mammals, and other biological resources. Attendees will participate in virtual research activities while building environmental knowledge and awareness of local biological communities.

Coral Reef Ecology 

Wednesday, September 30 @2-3:30PM 

An introduction to coral reefs/coral reef ecology. Detailing coral reef structure and their biological importance to coastal communities, with a specific emphasis on local ecosystems of the South Florida Coral Reef Tract. Attendees will get hands-on experience with research equipment and tools used during the in-situ study of corals, coral skeleton samples will be available for inspection, as well as dissecting microscopes for viewing coral anatomy. 

Coral Reef Conservation and Restoration 

Wednesday, November 4 @2-3:30PM 

Review the many challenges faced by coral reefs (including high temperatures, fishing pressure, vessel damage, pollution, storms, debris, invasive species, dredging, etc.) and understand how science is making a positive difference in their management, conservation, and restoration. Explore seven (7) conservation actions “you” (local community) can use to help these important ecosystems. 

Coral Reef Marine Life Identification 

Wednesday, December 2 @2-3:30PM 

Identifying marine life is an essential part of understanding Florida’s coral reef ecosystem.  Learn how and why scientists use taxonomic classification to recognize various species of fish, invertebrates, and corals based on their unique characteristics and habitat. Explore our local coral reefs and learn how to identify some of the most common marine animals.
