Welcome to the Delray Beach Public Library's Lifelong Learning Community Institute Summer 2011 Semester. Our Lifelong Learning Community Institute is based on the premise that learning should never cease and that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively, and culturally active fundamentally enriches and invigorates our lives.

We extend an enthusiastic invitation to join us and register for the Summer 2011 semester. We know you will find something that challenges and interests you. We have ample, free parking, and no hidden costs after course registration. We are trying something new for the Summer semester. There will be no membership fee.

Our Summer session courses are $50.00 or $40.00 (see individual course).

Guest passes are $15 for a one-time, single class visit & may be purchased at the Circulation Desk before the start of the class.


1. America's Hidden History: The Stories They Never Taught You in School

This course will examine America's hidden history and will reveal secrets and bring to light fascinating stories that we never learned in school. Discover some amazing moments that changed the history of our nation including seemingly mundane, comical and unusual events that ended up shaping our country. You will be amazed at what will be revealed during this in-depth look at our history.

Dr Robert WatsonDr. Robert Watson directs the American Studies program at Lynn University and has published nearly 30 books and hundreds of scholarly articles, encyclopedia essays, and newspaper columns on topics in American politics and history. A frequent media commentator, he has been interviewed by CNN, the BBC, MSNBC, USA Today, The New York Times, Fox News, Time and many other media outlets, and his commentary has appeared on C-SPAN, Book TV, the Voice of America, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and Hardball with Chris Mathews among others.

2. Nova Southeastern University Museum Art Series

Back by popular demand, this series will feature highly knowledgeable, museum-trained docents from the Museum of Art/Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University. Each class will give the participants an in-depth visual experience, including many of the art's most important masterworks. The unique and colorful personal histories of the artists will be discussed in the context of their art.
July 12th -The "Ashcan" Painters: Five American artists, under the leadership of Robert Henri, outraged critics with their gritty portrayal of daily life in new York City.

July 19th -Women Artists: The Feminine Perspective: A surprising look at some of the many women who struggled for recognition in the male-dominated art world, from the early 17th century to the modern era.

July 26th-Coming of Age: American Art 1850's to 1950's: See how American artists like Winslow Homer, James McNeil Whistler, and Georgia O'Keeffe moved the center of the art world from Paris to New York.

3. For the Love of Opera

Both for the novice and the experienced alike, this opera series will include an in-depth discussion of the fascinating history of the period in which the opera is taking place, a biography of the composer, the plot of the opera, and little-known facts about the careers of the singers. To further enhance the experience, magnificent, digitally re-mastered DVD's of World Opera performances with English subtitles will be viewed to round out this educational program.

July 13th - I Pagliacci by Ruggiero Leoncavallo starring Placido Domingo

July 20th - Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini

Matthew MinzerMatthew Minzer, a retired history teacher has been an opera lover for the past 50 years. He has attended 100's of operatic performances in many countries. In addition, Matthew was a friend of such opera greats as Richard Tucker, Jan Peerce, and, Beverly Sills.
